George FlippinIn honor of today I thought I would make a post about the first African-American athlete at the University of Nebraska. His name was George Flippin. Flippin attended Nebraska from 1891 – 1894.

Flippin was only the fifth black athlete at a mostly white university. Because Flippin was on the Nebraska football team Missouri refused to play a scheduled game with Nebraska in 1892. The result was a 1-0 forfeit. He was the first African-American inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

After Nebraska Flippin went on to the University of Illinois and its College of Physicians and Surgeons in Chicago, IL. He became a doctor and opened the first hospital in Stromsburg, NE. George Flippin was a respected physician and surgeon, known across the county for his willingness to make house calls regardless of the distance.

Weekend Edition

LNE’s Pensick commits to NU’s 2009 recruiting class – I love this quote: “I just always wanted to be a Husker. It’s a dream come true”. I think it is awesome when a Nebraska kid gets to play for the Cornhuskers.

Pelini signs contract; $1.1M annually – I figured it would be between 1.2 and 1.5 million. Considering the salaries of other coaches in division 1-a I think we got a major bargain. Only time will tell though.

A lull in the recruiting battles does not stop another recruit from de-committing – Oh well, you win some, you lose some. I think this staff will be able to fill his spot.

Ekeler energy enormous – I think this entire staff has a great energy. We have a great, young and pretty experienced staff. There are quite a few articles out there on the assistant coaches including John Papuchis.

Alonzo Whaley commits – Scout is showing that linebacker Alonzo Whaley has committed to the Huskers.

Tom Osborne given lifetime achievement award – Congrats to Coach Osborne for winning the Bear Bryant Lifetime Achievement award.

Pelini’s return seen as bridge between old, new Nebraska – I love what Osborne is doing with the AD and Pelini has done so far with football. This new Nebraska is definitely the old Nebraska.

Levorson’s loyalty never wavered – I am very proud this kid is from Nebraska. I look forward to seeing him play.

Bill Callahan hired as assistant head coach by Jets – Looks like his official title is assistant head coach but he will be working primarily with the offensive line. I wish lots of luck and success for Coach Callahan.

Some great Husker Youtube Videos.

Nebraska – This is the best Husker Youtube video there is. If this doesn’t get you pumped then you aren’t a Nebraska Cornhusker Fan.

A Typical Saturday in Lincoln – Entertaining video shot by a Husker fan from the sidelines.

Glory of the Corn – A great Husker video with a lot of awesome highlights.

“The Drive” against Texas A&M in 2006 – We block the field goal then go on an outstanding drive to win. I am really going to miss Purify. I love it when the announce yells “Taylor look out!”

Eric Crouch 95 yard run against Mizzou – Longest run in NU history.

Past has Jamrog primed for duty – I don’t really know how dead the walk-on program was but this all sounds pretty good. It looks like we are going after less JUCOs and more walk-ons. Probably a good thing if you want to build a football team over the long term.
