Jason PeterFormer Nebraska defensive tackle, Jason Peter, has an interview in the Omaha World-Herald about his new book chronicling his drug addiction. It’s a really long article but well worth the read. This is one of the most interesting questions and answers as far as I was concerned:

Q: What will the average Husker fan think after reading the book?

JP: Some might be disappointed. Some might have this image, maybe, in their mind that they don’t want distorted. This guy who is on the (Nebraska football) All-Century team, three national championship teams. I can’t control what other people think. I hope they read it and can just understand that I was just trying to tell a story that I went through, that I wasn’t trying to make myself a hero or anything.

Cornhuskers Have No ESPN 150 Watch List Prospects

Craig Haubert, a college football analyst at ESPN, has a nice writeup on Pelini’s recruitment progress this year. I think the most interesting part of the whole article is probably the caption under the giant photo of Pelini screaming: “Bo Pelini has secured five verbal commitments for Nebraska so far, though none are ESPN 150 Watch List prospects.”

As Haubert goes on to explain, recruiting top flight collegiate football players to Nebraska isn’t the slam dunk it probably once was. The last few years haven’t exactly been fans’ dreams come true on the field and recruits know this going in to their visits with the school. The other big problem is that the pool of local talent just isn’t as deep as other big ticket schools like Ohio State, USC or any of the major Florida colleges.

It’ll be interesting to see as the summer progresses how Nebraska finishes in the national recruitment lists.

Football 101 Event Raises Over $40,000

Bo PeliniThere was a nice article in the Lincoln Star Journal last week about Bo Pelini’s Football 101 program. The charity event, put on to raise funds for cancer research, drew over 1,000 fans. The attendees raised over $40,000.

Unlike former Football 101 events, Pelini’s also allow men to attend but the majority of guests are still women.

It’s important to remember that even though football in Nebraska is important there are still other things in life. The Football 101 event is a great way for the school and community to take a step back and lend a hand to others in need while still enjoying the game of football.
