A Look At College Recruiting

We post a lot about College Recruiting here at Husker Nation as it pertains to just Nebraska alone. Of course, there’s a lot more to this topic than just what happens with the Cornhuskers.

While a lot of the times all you hear about in regards to college recruiting is the cream of the crop in high school athletes there are still a lot of young kids out there looking for scholarships.

These student athletes might not be the best at their sports or positions but they’re still viable options for a number of colleges across the country. Anyone who has seen High school sports live knows the number of talented students out there who could play in college.

A recently growing trend amongst these high school athletes is to put together a College recruiting video to send to schools they’re interested in attending. These videos are basically new age marketing materials used to help land high school athletes scholarships.

Long gone are the days of players only getting a look from college coaches and staff if those school officials were willing to make road trips to see high school games. Thanks to the Internet and new technology, now high school athletes can take the recruiting trip right to the coaches with the use of video.

On Wednesday, highly recruited Texas quarterback Cody Green verbally committed to Nebraska. He’ll be a member of the 2009 class.

“Coach Watson and Coach Ek, there’s not enough words I can say about those two guys, especially Coach Watson,” the four-star gunslinger said. “He helped me out a lot. I’ll be 17 when I get (to Nebraska) and I need a parent figure more than a coach going into college. I’m really, really comfortable with Coach Watson up there.”

Green chose Nebraska over a handful of other schools: Baylor, Texas Tech, Texas A&M and several east coast schools including Miami and Boston College.

Rivals had Green ranked as the #10 “dual threat” quarterback in the nation. Last season he threw for 1,429 yards with 19 touchdowns and had 95 carries for 689 yards and four touchdowns.

Cornhuskers Have No ESPN 150 Watch List Prospects

Craig Haubert, a college football analyst at ESPN, has a nice writeup on Pelini’s recruitment progress this year. I think the most interesting part of the whole article is probably the caption under the giant photo of Pelini screaming: “Bo Pelini has secured five verbal commitments for Nebraska so far, though none are ESPN 150 Watch List prospects.”

As Haubert goes on to explain, recruiting top flight collegiate football players to Nebraska isn’t the slam dunk it probably once was. The last few years haven’t exactly been fans’ dreams come true on the field and recruits know this going in to their visits with the school. The other big problem is that the pool of local talent just isn’t as deep as other big ticket schools like Ohio State, USC or any of the major Florida colleges.

It’ll be interesting to see as the summer progresses how Nebraska finishes in the national recruitment lists.
