South Wins Shrine Bowl 7-3

For the 26th time in the game’s 50 year history, the South won the Shrine Bowl 7 – 3. The South scored on the very first play of the game with a long TD pass from quarterback John Dostal to receiver Rustin Dring. The North kicked a field goal on the next drive and then all scoring stopped as the Shrine Bowl turned into a defensive slug fest.

The South came into the game anticipating putting up lots of points due to the amount of talent they had on the offensive side of the ball, but it wasn’t meant to be. After the opening touchdown, the South only had four more first downs the rest of the game. The North’s defense was just too much for the South but unfortunately the North’s offense couldn’t get it together.

A Look At College Recruiting

We post a lot about College Recruiting here at Husker Nation as it pertains to just Nebraska alone. Of course, there’s a lot more to this topic than just what happens with the Cornhuskers.

While a lot of the times all you hear about in regards to college recruiting is the cream of the crop in high school athletes there are still a lot of young kids out there looking for scholarships.

These student athletes might not be the best at their sports or positions but they’re still viable options for a number of colleges across the country. Anyone who has seen High school sports live knows the number of talented students out there who could play in college.

A recently growing trend amongst these high school athletes is to put together a College recruiting video to send to schools they’re interested in attending. These videos are basically new age marketing materials used to help land high school athletes scholarships.

Long gone are the days of players only getting a look from college coaches and staff if those school officials were willing to make road trips to see high school games. Thanks to the Internet and new technology, now high school athletes can take the recruiting trip right to the coaches with the use of video.

Congrats to the NY Giants

Super Bowl LogoI was probably one of only a handful of people outside of Massachusetts rooting for a Patriots victory and needless to say was quite disappointed. The Giants defense was amazing. I was really impressed with how they shutdown Tom Brady and Company.

I wanted New England to win for two reasons. 1. I can’t stand Eli Manning after the fit he through when the Chargers were going to draft him and 2. The Patriots had two Huskers playing for the, Russ Hochstein and Le Kevin Smith. Click here for all the Super Bowl coverage you could possibly want.

As for the commercials I thought they were only sub par for the most part. My top 3 were Budweiser: “Rocky” from the first quarter, Amp: “Jumpstart” from the fourth quarter, and Budlight: “Fire” from the first quarter. The Careerbuilder and SalesGenie.com ads were the worst. You can view all the ads here.

Again, congrats to the New York Giants. Now bring on February 6th and those letters of intent.

Division 1-A playoff will never happen.

NCAA LogoLike many college football fans I am very displeased by the fact that division 1-A/Bowl Championship Division does not have a playoff. Though it irritates me I understand that the NCAA is completely driven by money with this issue.

It is very obvious to anyone you speak with that we need a playoff system in division 1 but we keep getting a modified version of the BCS. If they don’t want to have a playoff just come out and say the real reason, don’t try to push some second rate system on us and tell us how it is better.

I don’t really think that a playoff system using the current bowl structure would work. The reason, who is going to want to spend the money to go to a game where if their team wins they will play another more important game the next week? The only way to fix this is to seed the teams and have the game in the home stadium of the highest seeded team. So 1 vs 8 would be a home game for the 1 seed.

I see this as the only viable option and obviously it isn’t going to happen because I don’t see the Orange Bowl being played in Lincoln in early January. It is obvious there would be too much money being lost by the NCAA to use a system like this. On the other hand any other system I can think of would either have a lack of attendance or a total waste like the BCS. So basically, get used to the BCS. As much as it sucks we will never see an true playoff system and that just flat out sucks.

Congrats to Coach Pelini

First off I want to offer my congratulations to Bo Pelini on the win versus Ohio State last night. Coach Pelini makes me very proud as I am sure he does a lot of Husker fans this morning.

I have to say the first few minutes of the game had me a big worried. As I watched the 65 yard touchdown run then the long pass play on the next series I was imagining what it would be like on Husker message boards today. Basically I was preparing myself for another Husker Nation meltdown. You would think I would be used to these after last season, but I am not. Fortunately for us all LSU’s defense played great the remainder of the game and Pelini will have a nice National Championship ring to show recruits in the future.

Lets see what the media is saying this morning:

Pelini does his part in final game at LSU – HuskerExtra.com
Defense sends Pelini off with proud performance – The Times-Picayune
LSU defensive coordinator Pelini will now head to Nebraska – The Kansas City Star
Pelini Remained Focused On Tigers – TBO.com
LSU’s Pelini will not have anymore double duty – MiamiHearald.com

Please check back throughout the day for updates on Bo Pelini stories from the National Championship game.
